Let’s be honest, sometimes prayer can feel more like a routine with God than a relationship. What can we do to make prayer feel more... real? Here are a few creative ways to soak up Gods presence:
- Prayer Journal- Maybe you have heard about it and thought it wasn't for you. I encourage you to try it once or twice at least. I just started mine back in September, and I find it really encouraging when I feel like my battles are lasting forever, to read through all my prayers and realize how many things God fixed. There were things I had completely forgotten about, that had caused me so much stress. It is tangible evidence that God has never failed me. Some prayers I am still waiting on, but I know that God will take care of them the right way, even if it isn't my way.
- Praying in color- One fun and creative way to rejoice in the Lord is to draw your prayers, or to write your prayers and draw around them. If you are doing something with your hands and not just sitting there it can make it more engaging, especially for young children! It makes your time with God more memorable and vibrant, literally!
- Incorporate God into activities- If you have an activity you enjoy (or just do often) that you don't really have to think about as you do it, (ex. knitting, getting ready, dancing, cleaning, crafting) you can invite Jesus into your space. This is a great way to start inviting God into your everyday life. If you imagine Jesus is right there with you (which he is) , you may start acting more Christlike over time.
- Pray Psalms- Praying Psalms is like confessing your emotions to God. Psalms are praise, even in the midst of dread. But it doesn't have to be a Psalm, any scripture (or written work) that speaks to you is fair game. Perhaps after reading a few you will want to write your own Psalm!
- Sing worship music- There are many different genres of Christian music. Here is one of my favorites
- Meditation- As I read and learn more about meditation I realize I have been doing this without being aware of it. The definition of meditation revealed to me that meditating is exactly what I’m doing as I am journaling or reading my Bible. When I journal I am reflecting on my day and writing it down. As I read the Bible I pause when I come across a scripture that is important to me and reflect on it. Meditating is connecting with God and listening to what He has to say to me in that moment.
Please write in the comments below different ways that you like to connect with God!
Have a blessed week!
